Monster Seeing Online Job Demand Increase
Posted by John Vinson
Don’t start singing ‘I can See Clearly Now’ by Johnny Nash just yet, but perhaps you can start humming it. According to a report released by Reuters, Monster saw an increase in online job demand during March. The increase was 6 percent above March 2009.
Monster gauges it’s site by an index based on points. During March 2010, the index sat at 125 points. The total represented a 1 point increase from February, and a 7 point increase from March 2009. Monster attributes the increase in demand due to the rise of job offerings from construction companies.
Jesse Harriott, a vice president at Monster stated, “While the labor market continues to be challenging for those looking for work, we are encouraged to see early signs of what may be a return to consistent job growth.”
12 of the 20 industries on Monster saw an increase, along with 13 of 23 occupational types. Four of the nine U.S. regions enjoyed a higher job demand, the strongest areas being the Pacific and Mid Atlantic regions.
To coincide with these figures will be the U.S. Labor Dept’s report of jobless benefit claims, which comes out later in the week.
During the turbulent market of 2009, almost no industry was safe from downsizing and layoffs. One industry, however, seems to have made it through relatively unscathed. And also looks poised to make a big increase in the coming year – the medical field.
Reports, like this one from the Gainseville Sun are all too common. Healthcare jobs stayed safe in 2009, and will be poised for an increase with many more students getting into the field.
As always with reports, it’s important to take the new lightly. Numbers can be misleading, especially when they seem to be positive. If the U.s. Labor Dept’s figures match with Monster’s index increase, then perhaps it will be time to start thinking positively again.
With the reports of increase in job creation and hiring, this will make for an interesting election season. Politicians will be jockeying for position, using the numbers to earn votes. Just how much of a factor they were in the increase remains to be seen.
