The Key To Finding A Job Is Networking - A Winning Tactic

Finding a job these days is difficult at best - with hundreds or thousands of applicants going after the same job! Most resumes won't even be seen for these positions. This is what happens when positions are posted for the general public to see. How to get around this?

Networking is by far the best tool to use in finding out about jobs that are available, and to get your foot in the door. Networking means talking to and interacting with people - all people - to let them know you are in the job search market, and to see if they know of any jobs or companies or people for you to contact. Let them know what you do - perhaps you can carry a business card with your skills or objective so you can hand it out.

With any information you get from your contacts, make sure to follow up with it. Call people who were suggested to you, and call the companies you were referred to. You will find that people can give you valuable leads, and there will be positions that you can go after that aren't widely posted. You will find "insider" information that will allow you to tweak your resume and cover letter to target the job. You may find out about in-house jobs that aren't posted outside - you might be the best one qualified so put in for it, anyway.

So how do you go about effectively networking? There are many ways, and we are setting up this capability at our newsletter and site - so you will gain a good network of people to talk to. Just talk to everyone you meet - in the grocery store, your neighbors, and anyone else. Talk to the unemployed, as well - they get leads that they can't use, but perhaps you can use. They have tried Company X and they know it is run by an alcoholic who abuses his workers. They know that they got an interview with Manager Z because of something they put on the resume - perhaps you can use the same tactic. Everyone is a good resource to your networking venture. Just get out and talk to them!
